Fantastically Fun Fridays: October 21, 2011

Happy Friday!  We hope you enjoyed our coverage of N.K. Jemisin's Inheritance trilogy this week--we will return to her work in a few weeks with a review of Kingdom of Gods.  In the meantime, we'd encourage you to pick up the first two books in the series and read them for yourself.

Next week, we will be celebrating All Hallow's Read Week.  What is that, you might ask?  Here's the All Hallow's Read website, along with an explanation from Neil Gaiman about what you do during All Hallow's Read:

We have a series of guest contributors next week, along with a special book giveaway, so make sure you come back and join in the fun!

While you wait, here are some of the fun things we found around the internet this week:

  • Locus Online has been running a series on SF for kids.  Here's a roundup of the posts. (Locus Online)
  • Gandalf...I mean, Magneto...wait, no, Sir Ian McKellan reads a tire changing instruction manual. (Open Culture)
  • A fascinating look at how time travel might be possible, and how to build a time machine, if we only had the right technology. (New Scientist)
  • What if The Call of Cthulhu had been written by Dr. Seuss?  Well, now we know.  This is just the cover, but make sure you check out all of the pages, done by DrFaustusAU, along with some other fun SF/F related artwork. (Deviant Art)
  • Totally awesome (and quite illegal) scifi road sign hacks. (Blastr)
  • This trailer for the movie Avengers makes me very excited to see it. (YouTube)
  • A while back, our editor Kat Howard's story "A Life in Fictions" was featured on Symphony Space.  Now you, too, can hear her wonderful story. (Selected Shorts)
  • China Mieville presents a new way of thinking about the literary fiction versus scifi/fantasy debate. (Guardian)
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
