Our Fantastic Favorites: The Light Princess

The Light Princess by George MacDonald is an extraordinarily odd story. It's dressed up in the trappings of fairy tale, but those trappings can barely restrain the oddness and sharpness of a heartless, floating princess who has been deprived of her gravity (in both senses of the word). I have loved this book since I was very young. I have read it in different incarnations (adapted by Robin McKinley, illustrated by Maurice Sendak, transformed into one of the most lingering and creepy audio books I have ever heard), and every time I revisit the story, it raises prickles in my head and makes me, inexplicably, very happy.

  1. Adapted by Robin McKinley!? No-one told me! Why does no-one tell me these things?
