The Fantastic in the Fine Arts: The St. Paul Winter Carnival

Every year, the people of St. Paul, Minnesota hold a winter carnival to celebrate the cold and the snow, rather than hide from it.  This year's Winter Carnival is going on right now, and while a festival isn't exactly part of the fine arts, the ice palaces that are part of many of the winter carnivals are magical creations.  Here, for example, is a picture of the 2004 Winter Carnival Ice Castle:

Here is a video from the city of St. Paul that gives more information about the Winter Carnival, as well as lets you see many of the ice palaces that have been built:

The ice palaces in and of themselves are marvelous creations, but the way that many of them are lit, creating a beautiful glow, makes them even more fantastic.  I'm also impressed by how the ice comes from all across the state--a wonderful example of a whole state coming together to create something magical.

So, if you're in the Minnesota area, you should go check this year's festival out and experience the magic for yourself!
