Breath of Life

Snow White is not really my thing. I think this is because my first encounter with it was the Disney movie, and I find Snow White's singing voice quite unpleasant. Even the retellings (with the exception of Neil Gaiman's brilliant "Snow, Glass, Apples,") for the most part leave me cold.

So I had no intention of seeing "Snow White and the Huntsman" when it comes out this summer. But I do love Florence + the Machine, and the video for the song "Breath of Life" from the "Snow White and the Huntsman" soundtrack has changed my mind.

While I understand that brief cuts from a movie interspersed into a three minute music video certainly don't tell the whole story, the images that I do see give me hope that the people behind the film actually understand fairy tale and myth. The ravens, the white stag, Charlize Theron's Queen Ravenna in the milk bath, and the repetition of the black/ white/ red color pattern all have deep symbolic resonance. And the film looks visually stunning - beautiful and strange, two things that I greatly desire in my fairy tales.
