Midweek Fiction: Mary Robinette Kowal, "First Flight"

Many writers also have non-writing jobs. Few have a non-writing job as cool as 2008 Campbell Award winner, Mary Robinette Kowal, who is also a professional puppeteer. (You can see highlights of her puppetry at her site, here.)

Aside from her talent as a puppeteer, Kowal is a very talented writer. She's won a Hugo, and been nominated for several major awards. "First Flight," originally published by Tor.com in August of 2009, is my favorite piece of her short fiction.
