Friday Featured Film: Elysium

It takes a lot to get me to the theater to see a movie.  And so even though I've been intrigued by some of the scifi/fantasy movies that have come out this summer (particularly Man of Steel), the only movie I've seen in the theaters was one outside these genres: Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.

I think, though, that I will be heading to theaters at least once more this summer to see this film:

Opening on August 9th, Elysium is directed by Neill Blomkamp, the same guy who directed District 9.  Given this connection, as well as what I've seen in the trailer, I have hopes that Elysium will be not only an amazing visual spectacle, but will also have something interesting to say about social issues like class difference.  I'm also interested in how the film will visually and thematically compare to Blade Runner--another film in which the rich have all left earth, leaving the poor and sick behind.

Have a great weekend, everyone--and stay cool!
