Movie Monday: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Of course, the big movie event for science fiction and fantasy fans this December is the second installment of The Hobbit.  But if you already saw that this weekend and are wondering what you will go see when your family holiday gathering descends into chaos, keep The Secret Life of Walter Mitty in mind.

Based on a famous story by James Thurber, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty tells the story of a man who daydreams to escape the mundanity of his everyday life.  Take a look:

While this film isn't fantasy in the conventional sense (there are no elves, dragons, or magic), it is a film about the power of imagination and the way an escape from reality can actually end up having a profound impact on reality--both themes central to fantasy literature.  Plus, the visuals of the film look simply stunning.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty opens on December 25, 2013.

  1. I love that stroy, and felt a little disappointed last week when I watched the trailer. It seems that producers favoured massive effects over James Thurber's humour. I think I'll stay with Chuck Jones' "From A to Z-Z-Z-Z" (1954).

    1. I agree--the movie seems to be going in a very different direction than the story did, so fans of Thurber should probably proceed with a lot of caution.
