It reminds me of the episode with the Klingon spy and the crazy/extremist judge whose father is quoted by Picard and really sets her off her rocker. There was a "what kind of society do we want to be" lens focusing that jurisprudence-y ST:TNG episode, too, albeit less about existential issues and more about the rule of law generally. If I'm remembering that episode correctly, at least. Do I smell a topic for "Why Fantasy Matters: Thoughts on Law, Politics, and Society (Part III)"?Unknownhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11976570394126822524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-161736963000855626.post-20957717041722026042011-10-15T14:23:49.020-05:002011-10-15T14:23:49.020-05:00Great article! For example, with the increase of nanotech and cybernetic implants, is there a point when a human is not a human but property? Like in The Forever War, old people can get replacement bodies, but then they become property and must fight in the war. What if people get in overwhelming debt purchasing synthetic body parts - will they then become indentured servants to the corporations? Your article is really interesting and brings up lots of interesting ideas for discussion.djmezackhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01068154086218760117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-161736963000855626.post-43583309316467113652011-10-14T10:43:44.937-05:002011-10-14T10:43:44.937-05:00This is a great essay. This is a great essay.Kat Howardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05426428902443086057noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-161736963000855626.post-48128834402978363952011-10-13T21:01:33.648-05:002011-10-13T21:01:33.648-05:00Great post, Heather! In other words, is there (and should there be) a sliding scale of when people rise above what is simply permissible to what is right and good?Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16975686434809044705noreply@blogger.com
